Phono Stages
The Phono Stage is a dedicated preamplifier which provides the connection between a record player and an amplifier. You may also hear them called Phono Preamplifiers or Phono Preamps.
Why are they needed? Well, the electrical output from any phonograph cartridge is comparatively weak, and requires additional noise-tolerant amplification before being sent onto a power amplifier, and then to your loudspeakers.
When vinyl was common, phono stages usually came built-in to most amplifiers, however this changed when digital formats became more prevalent. Many amps do not feature a phonograph input, and so will require a separate phono stage to play vinyl records.
