Preamplifiers
Preamplifiers (often called pre-amps, or simply pre’s) convert a weak electrical signal into a decent output signal. This needs to be strong enough to be tolerant of extraneous noise, and of sufficient quality to cope with further signal processing.
The output signal from your preamplifier is then sent to a power amplifier (sometimes by way of an equaliser), and then onto your loudspeakers for your enjoyment.
Without good-quality pre-amplification, the final output signal is likely to be far more noisy or distorted than necessary. Preamplifiers were historically used to boost signals from pure analogue sources, however digital preamps are now widely available too.
