Philips
Founded in 1918, Philips began by making carbon-filament lamps and quickly became one of the largest producers and exporters in Europe. The company subsequently expanded into X-ray technology, radio, television, electrical health & beauty products, and medical imaging, amongst many other fields.
In 1963 Philips introduced the Compact Audio Cassette, and in later decades the LaserVision Optical Disc. These were followed in 1982/3 by the hugely successful Compact Disc, and next a partnership with Sony in 1997 produced DVD technology. All the while the company continued ground-breaking research into CT scans and associated medical technology. The impact that Philips has had on the modern world cannot be overstated.
