Subwoofers
A subwoofer (or Sub) is a relatively large, active-type loudspeaker designed to reproduce the extreme low-end (the sub-bass) of the audio frequency spectrum. Nothing to do with the underside of a dog. 🙂
Technically, the term subwoofer only refers to the speaker driver itself. However in everyday use, it refers to the driver unit, the purpose-built speaker enclosure, and the built-in specialist amplification.
Subwoofers are never used alone. They are designed to complement and augment the frequency range of your main loudspeakers, which cover the rest of the frequency spectrum. In a home cinema system, the “.1” in a 3.1 / 5.1 / 7.1 system refers to the separately-powered subwoofer.
