Traditionally, high quality home loudspeakers were exclusively large, floor-standing speaker enclosures, whereas small speaker cabinets had reputation of low price and low audio quality. Beginning in the 1960’s, some manufacturers began making more expensive, compact high fidelity speakers, catering for a demand for smaller speakers from hifi enthusiasts who lived in small apartments, with little or no space for large speaker enclosures. The term bookshelf speaker became popular as very illustrative of the space required for such an enclosure.
