Subwoofers
Nothing to do with the underside of a dog, a Subwoofer (or “Sub”) is actually a relatively large loudspeaker designed to reproduce the extreme low-end (sub-bass) of the audio frequency spectrum.
While the term subwoofer technically only refers to the speaker driver itself, in everyday use the term refers to said driver unit mounted in a purpose-built speaker enclosure, and often featuring built-in specialist amplification.
Subwoofers are never used alone, as they are intended to complement and augment the frequency range of your main loudspeakers, which cover the rest of the frequency spectrum. In a home cinema system, the “.1” in a 3.1 / 5.1 / 7.1 system refers to the separately-powered subwoofer.
