Electrostatics
Electrostatic loudspeakers and headphones work on a different principle to the more common dynamic version. A thin membrane is suspended in a magnetic field, and generate sounds by moving according the force (current) applied to it.
Electrostatics are famous for extremely low distortion levels, and for having a very wide frequency response. This makes for a very precise, detailed sound, even in the bass, which many report as sounding less boomy and tighter than dynamic designs.
Please note that electrostatic headphones require special energiser drive units in order to function correctly.
