Description
Orbe
The Orbe is the flagship turntable by Michell Engineering. Orbe builds upon all that was learnt from developing the classic GyroDec and subsequently pushes everything to the next level.
Featuring two levels of isolation, a massive 60 mm vibration damping platter, and the most sophisticated power supply / motor configuration Michell have ever created. Together these all help raise Orbe to levels of performance that is orders of magnitude above its modest price point.
As with all Michell Engineering turntables, the unique orientation of the main bearing allows complete lubrication of the inside of the entire bearing while the platter is turning.
This is achieved by way of a modified Archimedean screw machined into the inside bore of the bearing. Oil is drawn from a reservoir at the base of the main bearing, up to the thrust ball at the top, thus fully lubricating as it goes.
The oil then returns to the reservoir via a waste hole drilled into the bearing spindle. This method of lubrication ensures any potential for noise or vibration created by platter rotation is avoided.
Please note that all Michell Engineering turntables can be adjusted and fitted out in different ways. This includes different tonearms, record clamps, covers and accessories. Please contact us before purchase for full details.
Features
- Low Contact Area Feet: The solid aluminium feet of Orbe are carefully shaped. The area in contact with the supporting surface is very small. This minimises vibration transfer from the supporting furniture into the turntable.
- Dual High Density Acrylic Bases: Separated by three pin-points, the acrylic bases of Orbe provide a rigid, non-resonant surface upon which to fix the suspension system. They also create a very efficient isolation platform to help eliminate structural feedback.
- Three-Point Spring Suspension System: Three suspension towers are fixed to the acrylic base to hold the suspension springs in place and provide height adjustment for the sub chassis.
- Weighted Pendulum-Style Sub Chassis: Hanging on the three suspension springs, this provides a rigid dense platform to mount the main bearing, platter and tonearm assembly. This layout ensures there is no movement between them, while also acting as a resonance / vibration sink. This draws away unwanted vibrations from the sensitive elements of the turntable.
- Inverted Oil Circulating Main Bearing: Contrary to traditional designs, the main bearing has the point of rotation at the top of the assembly, not at the bottom.
- Extra Heavy Impedance-Matched Platter: The selected platter material features vibration dampening characteristics, because sonically it is a very similar material to vinyl. Correspondingly it has a very neutral sound characteristic. The extra mass of the Orbe platter provides great momentum, which aids speed stability.
- Free Standing Motor Unit: The motor drive unit is completely separate to the turntable. It does not touch the turntable in any way. The only connection between motor and turntable platter is the drive belt. This prevents noise or vibration reaching the sensitive parts of the turntable.
- Orbe Controller Power Supply: The most sophisticated power supply Michell manufacture. The Orbe controller uses a large toroidal transformer, Never Connected™ circuitry and servo-motor control technology, ensuring the platter always rotates at the correct speed. All the time the platter is turning, the motor reports the RPM. The controller automatically adjusts its output to correct any change. The result: Speed stability of an Orbe turntable is absolutely rock solid.
- Hinged Lid: Orbe is supplied with a hinged, clear acrylic lid. This protects your turntable from dust and damage. The hinges are made in two parts that allow the lid to be easily removed if required.
- Orbe Record Clamp: The Orbe clamp is a screw-down design, which allows you to exert more force on to the vinyl when clamping it to the platter. This further helps in flattening warped and uneven vinyl and eliminate resonance in the vinyl disk.
