Active Speakers
Active speakers contain their own built-in amplification, and so do not require external preamplifier or power amplifier stages.
This can have great benefits in terms of space, convenience, compatibility and overall system cost. Simply connect your chosen source devices (Streaming / CD / Turntable) to your active speakers, and you have a great quality sound system, all ready to go.
There are downsides too though – the quality and power of internal amplifiers cannot match the standard of individual preamplifier / power amplifier components (with the exception of active subwoofers), and it is impossible to upgrade or change just one part of your system when needed. As always, the right solution will be unique to your needs.
